Colleges Against Cancer Overview How you can get involved!

Colleges Against Cancer Volunteer student organization dedicated to fighting cancer through awareness, advocacy, service, and research Most of our work is done on campus, but we also reach out to the larger community Four strategic directions: Advocacy, Survivorship, Cancer Education, and Relay For Life 1 in 3 American’s will be diagnosed with cancer in his/her lifetime

Last June, CAC was awarded the prestigious Dean’s Award (given to only four student organizations each year) The Dean's Award recognizes "an outstanding level of achievement by a student group that has enriched the quality of student life on campus."

Advocacy The movement against cancer isn’t just personal, it’s political. Advocacy tackles cancer at the policy level through student- driven initiatives. Our campaign for change has lead us to: – Work to make Stanford smoke-free – Collect signatures to pass Michelle’s Law – Collect signatures to put Hope 2010 on the CA ballot

Cancer Education Cancer Education focuses on educating the campus community on cancer-related health issues. The decisions young people make now affect their health years down the line. In the past we have carried out campaigns to promote: – Lung Cancer Awareness – Breast Cancer Awareness – Nutrition and Physical Activity – Cancer awareness specific to ethnic communities

Survivorship Survivors are the people we’re fighting for, our hope and inspiration, and our reason to keep going. At Stanford, we find ways to celebrate survivors, provide a support network, and remind ourselves why fighting cancer is still so important. In the past we’ve honored survivors through various interactive activities: o Faces of Cancer display o Survivor’s Lunch at Relay o Valentine’s Day cards

Relay For Life For 24 hours, teams of students, staff, and local community members camp out on the track and celebrate survivors while honoring lives lost in an evening luminaria ceremony. Throughout our annual spring event are live performances, activities, and featured entertainment from Stanford student groups. Every year Relay brings the community closer together by reminding us just how universal cancer is.
