Remnant buttes Long/lat: (in random order) E, 23.89N E, 23.95N E, 23.98N E, 24.04N E, 24.05N E, 24.14N E, 24.13N E, 23.98N Rational: Remnant buttes give access in a very limited space to many layers. The objective will not be to drive to all of them, but to target the closest to the actual landing site, and possibly some other(s) on the way to other targets. Morphology & mineralogy: Small remnant buttes are present throughout the area (the ellipse is not completely flat), but the largest and highest one are all found east of the ellipse, just before the flank of Mawrth Vallis. We are not considering here remnant buttes of the dark cap, which are numerous at the site. All these buttes are located in large Fe/Mg-smectite bearing outcrops, but the top of the highest buttes may reach the Al- phyllosilicate level. MSL tasks: At large scale, study the layering of the two sub-units, the transition from one to the other. At small scale, study the layering, the grain structure, the mineralogy and chemistry of the rocks and the variations from one to the other sub-unit and within each sub-unit HRSC mosaic with HRSC nadir & color images 6 7 8
