The ANITA Calibration System Calibration System Overview Noise Diode RF Tickler Status

Calibration System Diagram

Noise Diode Design History Original design was to have 10 noise diode each split 8 ways into each QRH RF channel. In the process of SURF prototyping Peter raised a concern that this design leads to a correlated noise signal in which is undesirable for testing of the trigger system. Redesign to have a unique noise diode for each QRH RF channel with a simple bias circuit.

Noise Diode Module - Design Larry Ruckman has laid out a board to accommodate two NC305 Noisecom Noise Diodes (10 Hz-3GHz, ENR) on a 24V Bus. Board fits in 1.5” sq RF aluminum box from Compac-RF (same box used for Mini-Circuits ZKL-1R5). Plan to use one module per RFCM. Noise diodes to be placed only in QRH RFCMs.

Calibration Pulser Box (Inside Main EMI Enclosure) Open Design Issues/Questions Unknown if AVTECH works in Vacuum – test required. TTL control of Pulser and Switch may require inverter as Acromag uses Active Low Logic. Monitor Line to be read out by SURF channel? Finalize antenna choice (DiscCone?) and location.

AVTECH AVP-2S-M Pulser 0-2V amplitude pulser capable of pulses between ns. Very fast pulses – rise time ≤ 50 ps, fall time ≤ 200 ps with rate up to 1 MHz. Triggered via TTL pulse. Unit will have a monitor line which provides a 20 dB attenuated coincident replica of pulser output. Must get customized unit to work on +24V power bus – AVTECH can provide at a cost of $3547 AVTECH can also provide a +24V unit with temperature-stabilization circuitry so the pulse width when operated at 0.2 ns will not vary more than +/- 20% as temperature varies from degrees and instrument will not be damaged operating from 0 to 50C (as opposed to the nominal 0-40C). Pulse width would be limited to 1 ns rather than 4ns. Cost increases to $5945.

Calibration System Status Have quotes from AVTECH on pulser (~2.5 month lead time) RF Switch has been ordered ND components for EM flight are in house, boards and boxes should be arriving this week, ~1 week to stuff all boards for EM flight, ~1 week to test. Have not done any work on antennas for pulser.
