Division of Resources: Our Footprints in Our World Action Aid Workshop Lesson Plan – Group 6 ICKFELK HLIOS Age Group: 10 – 12 years of age
Objectives/Goals The children will be enabled to… Recognise that the world resources are not divided equally among nations Discuss critically the food and other resources that they (as part of a certain society) consume and the impact that this has for the global community
Organisation The children are split into unequal groups, e.g. of 4, 6, 8 and 12 Each group is given a certain number of sheets on which there is a picture of a footprint. Some of the sheets of paper are in plastic (laminated)
What happens?... The groups of children line up behind a line on one side of the classroom or playground etc. They will have to use the footprints to get their group to the other side of the classroom where there will be a second line. The children may only walk on the sheets and if they fall off the footprint (even one step) their whole group will have to start again.
The Challenge…. The footprints are divided UNEQUALLY among the groups. E.g. the group with 12 will only have 3 sheets, while the group with only 4 people will have 10 sheets. THEREFORE… For some it is really EASY to cross the room For others it is almost IMPOSSIBLE!
After the children have tried this task and experienced the difficulties they will stop and discuss how they might change their approach so that the whole class can make it across the room They test their ideas Afterwards they discuss how the activity has gone and the observations they have made
NB: It is up to the students to make the connection between this activity and the division of world resources
Thank you for listening!
