Survey The objective of the Central Baltic project Enterprising SELF - Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Finland, is to improve the attitudes in society towards enterprising and therefore improve regional competitiveness. To measure this, a survey is going to be carried out twice during the project period. The first time at the beginning of the project (fall 2009) and the second time at the end of the project (May 2011).

Survey November 2009 Target group for the survey is school personnel and students age Number of school personnel respondents: 576 Number of student respondents: 2102 The survey is evaluated on a scale from 1 to 5 where 1 is not at all, 2 Very little 3 Sometimes 4 Often 5 very much/always.

School personnel

I have experience from enterprising training, for example courses on enterprising in studies or on up-dating training

I let the students search for knowledge by themselves in my teaching

My teaching is based on learning- by- doing methodology

I carry out some of the teaching outside the classroom and the school (for example study visits)

My colleagues are eager to develop enterprising teaching in my school

The term Enterprising Some selected answers from the teachers survey: ” For me enterpising is to dare expose yourself to difficulties, to be brave enough to fail and to try again. Finding new ways….” ”Enterprising is: life attitude, ability to solve problems, creativity and innovations, to make dreams come true.. ” ” Enterprising is attitude. It´s about thinking in new ways and see posibilities which other people doesn´t see. It´s about how to do new things in new ways. A person who has an enterprising attitude could be a person how starts a new company. But all people who starts companies are not peoples with an enterprising attitude. An enterprising attitude could also be to develop an organisation like for example a company or a school. ”

Students

I react on and discuss what the teachers say

I feel motivated in my schoolwork and have endurance to go through with it

I think that I'm the one responsible for my own learning

I try to find answers to assignments by myself instead of asking the teacher

I take active interest in for example the student's council or likewise to be able to influence my school

I would like to have my own firm or business in the future

The term Enterprising Some selected answers from the student survey: ”Often I can do it, but if I can't than I just try to do it. ….” ”Initiative, creative, wants to undertake some new projects ” ”Showing initiative in new projects. ” ”Enterprising is - when somebody does something! ” ”Enterprising is having your own firm or running your own business”

Comparison School personnel and students

School personnel: Students: I can tell my students what the term enterprising means I can explain the term enterprising for someone who doesn't know what it is

School personnel:Students: I give the students the freedom to decide and plan the tasks in my teaching I like to decide over my working hours and how I want to solve the task I'm given at school

School personnel: Students: The school informs/educates me on how I can run my own firm or business in the future I prepare the students to have their own business in the future

I encourage the students to explore their own ideas during my lessons School personnel: Students: I come up with my own ideas on the tasks that are assigned at school

Next survey Will be presented at the seminar in Finland September 2011
