Living 3:16 With Passion for Jesus March 30

Think About It … What is the nastiest food you have ever tasted? … Or couldn’t taste! – Check out what Andrew Zimmern says online Jesus says one of the New Testament churches’ lack of passion for Christian living was enough to make him “spit it out.”  Today we look at how to have a passion for God.

Listen for how the author of this passage describes himself. Rev. 1:9-11 (NIV) I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. [10] On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit,

Listen for how the author of this passage describes himself. and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, [11] which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."

Jesus Is Present Even in Hard Times What do we learn about John from this passage? John was in political exile on the island of Patmos. What evidence do we see here that he was keeping his passion for God even though taken out of circulation? What kinds of situations can make us feel set aside or out of circulation for the Lord?

Jesus Is Present Even in Hard Times What do these verses tell us about God’s attitude toward us when we have hard times? Note that the Roman government could exile John to keep him from speaking publicly, but they could not … – stop his voice – stop God’s Word When you feel exiled by health or circumstances God can still use your life for His glory! from reaching the churches

Listen for what John saw and how he reacted to that sight. Rev. 1:12-13 (NIV) I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, [13] and among the lampstands was someone "like a son of man," dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. …

Listen for what John saw and how he reacted to that sight. [17] When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. [18] I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Jesus Is Lord Over Life and Death List the things John saw when he turned around. John says he fell at this sight as though dead … what did the man (Jesus) say to John?

Jesus Is Lord Over Life and Death John was facing tough times in being exiled. How did Jesus’ appearance and words encourage John? Why would these facts make a difference in why we can trust and be passionate about following Jesus?

We might say Jesus “had a bone to pick” with Laodicea. Listen for why. Rev. 3:14-17 (NIV) "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. [15] I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!

We might say Jesus “had a bone to pick” with Laodicea. Listen for why. [16] So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth. [17] You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

Jesus Rejects Spiritual Apathy First of all, how does Jesus identify Himself to the church at Laodicea? Now what issue does He have with the church there? Note the background of the city – their water supply – their trade in shiny black woolen cloth – their expertise in medicine for the eye

Jesus Rejects Spiritual Apathy Jesus makes a spiritual point about each of these economic issues to speak to their spiritual needs Consider elements of our culture – what kinds of accusations would Jesus make about these things? How are believers today acting in self sufficiency instead of trusting the Lord?

Listen for recommendations concerning the elements of their self sufficiency. Rev. 3:18-22 (NIV) I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. [19] Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. [20] Here I am! I stand at the door and knock.

Listen for recommendations concerning the elements of their self sufficiency. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. [21] To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. [22] He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Jesus Offers Intimate Fellowship What does Jesus say for each of their spiritual problems?  In short … earnestly repent … allow God’s discipline to change your lives Spiritual Problem Spiritual Recommendation Blindness Nakedness Poverty

Jesus Offers Intimate Fellowship What does God promise to the one who opens their heart’s door to Jesus? We often use verse 20 in a salvation presentation … how could this also apply to a believer?

Application Meditate on John’s vision of Jesus in Rev. 1: and chapters 4 & 5 where John beholds Christ reigning in heaven … write down what you learn about Christ’s Glory and majesty Make a list of things in your life that could be distracting you from seeing Jesus as He truly is Make a list of things God might be calling you to stop doing or to start doing which will increase your passion for Jesus
