Colorado Space Grant Consortium Timing Circuit HW #4 Class #07 Timing Circuit HW #4 Class #07

2 - Your team will do the following: - Build the timing circuit Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

3 - Test with 12 V power Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

4 Parts needed for Timing Circuit Steps: 1 Timing Circuit kit Parts needed for Timing Circuit Steps: 1 Timing Circuit kit Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

5 Step 1a: Layout timing circuit kits and set parts out Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 1b: Study the PC Board front and back Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

NOTE: The following steps are slightly different from those listed on the Velleman box. Both will produce same final product Step 2: Put connectors together NOTE: The following steps are slightly different from those listed on the Velleman box. Both will produce same final product Step 2: Put connectors together Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 3: Solder connect to board as shown: NOTE: Velleman instructions are different. Step 3: Solder connect to board as shown: NOTE: Velleman instructions are different. Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 4: Solder relay to board as shown: Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 5: Solder resistors to board as shown: Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera R1=R2=R3=1 KΩ

Step 6: Solder diodes as shown (watch polarity): Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera D2 D3 D1

Step 7: Install trimpots as shown. Do not adjust at this time. Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera RV2=50K=PULSE RV1=1M=PAUSE

Step 8: Install red LED Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera LED: Make sure short lead is installed in hole next to relay (flat side)

Step 9: Install Capacitor C1 Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera C1=100 nF

Step 10: Install Capacitor C2 and C3. Watch polarity. Positive lead is the long lead and goes in the positive hole Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera C3=100 µF C2=100 µF

Step 11: Solder socket. Be careful of solder bridges. Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 12: Install 555 Timer chip. Be careful of orientation Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 13: Install A23 batteries (12 V) into specially made case Step 14: Use voltmeter to verify you have 12 V Step 13: Install A23 batteries (12 V) into specially made case Step 14: Use voltmeter to verify you have 12 V Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera Make sure switch is ON

Step 15: Insert the black wire from the battery pack into GND (Should be “-” of battery). Step 15: Insert the black wire from the battery pack into GND (Should be “-” of battery). Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 15c: Connect the black wire from the switch to the red wire from the batteries by snapping together the connectors Step 15b: Insert the green wire from the switch into the +12V terminal on the timing circuit (should be “+” of battery) Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 16: Flip switch ON (should here a click and see red LED light up) NOTE: If not, flip switch OFF and have timing circuit inspected Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera

Step 17: Adjust the pause to get an interval of between 30 and 60 seconds. Make sure that the pulse is long enough that the camera will actually take a picture (somewhere around 1 second).

Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera Step 18: Tape the sides of the battery case and tape the batteries into place

Hands-on: Timing Circuit, Power & Camera Step 19: Disconnect 12 V battery and package everything to bring to class on Tuesday. Make sure the leads of your 12 V Battery are taped off

Colorado Space Grant Consortium Heaters Class #07 Heaters Class #07

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 20: Set out kit

Back Front Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 21: Layout Resistors on Perf Board

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 22: Fold over the leads from two of the blocks and solder them together

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 23: Snip the leads that you just soldered together

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 24: Fold over the opposite two leads and solder so that all of the blocks are connected in parallel then clip the ends of the leads

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 24 continued: 4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 25: Twist all the Red wires from the 9V connector together and solder them to the single Blue wire in your kit. (Do not solder red wire from switch)

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 26: Twist all the Black wires from the 9V connector together and solder them to the black wire from the switch.

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 27: Solder the single Blue wire from 9V connector to one end of the resistor string and the other Red wire from switch to the other end of the resistor string 4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω4Ω

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 28: With switch ON, check positive (+) circuit connections with voltmeter.

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 29: With switch ON, check negative (-) circuit connections with voltmeter.

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 30: Put electrical tape on solder joints in Steps 25 and 26

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 31: Attach 3 flight batteries and turn switch on. Your heater will get extremely hot with in 1 to 2 minutes. If longer, please let me know.

Hands-on: Heater Circuit Step 32: Turn switch off, disconnect the switch from the heater, leave batteries connected
