October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs1 LST Mechanical Design Review 2005 IR-2 Installation Discussion H.J. Krebs October 22, 2003

H.J. Krebs Installation Scope of work is located on side sextants Upper east Lower east Upper west Lower West –Remove 18 layers of RPCs –Install 6 layers of 7/8” thick brass absorber in layers 5,7,9,11,13 & 15 – 11.5 tons/sextant –Install LST detectors in layers 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,17 & 18

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs Installation PEP support tube/SVT will be removed –In 2002, this added approximately 1 month to the amount of down time needed There will be more than twice the work for LST detector installation compared to 2004 –4 sextants instead of 2 –Sextants are inclined 60° instead of horizontal Steel removal work is slightly less than twice that of 2004 –6 corner blocks instead of 4 –4 flux bars instead of 2 In order to remove the middle corner blocks, a load transfer of the barrel and end cap calorimeter must be accomplished – this is a big deal All side sextants on the FWD end must be uncabled and all piping removed in order to remove the flux bars

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs Installation It is not yet determined if the LST installation can occur with the end doors opened to nominal travel of 2850mm. The end doors block direct access to the side points of the barrel hex. –Main issue here is the Z-strip installation With corner blocks removed, there should be 15.7” of space between the end door and the barrel steel –It may be determined that full access to the steel gaps is required Disconnect end door drive systems Disconnect FWD end door gleasons Move end doors as far as possible in +/-X direction – approximately 3200mm from detector center –Main shield wall to east –Back wall of IR-2 to west Remove FWD end door layer 13 thru 16 modules Remove FWD end plug Adds approximately 2 weeks to schedule

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs Installation Twice as many RPCs to dispose of –7,200 square feet of detectors Object storage (flux return steel, platforms, etc.) will be identical to 2004 Installation crews work one 8-hour shift six days per week instead of two shifts in 2004 –Crews will include all or most of the same players –Organization will duplicate 2004 –Continuous safety oversight is needed System work (other than LST) may occur on swing and owl shifts Some positive comments –Much will be learned in 2004 Crews will gain experience Tooling may be improved

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs Installation Rough time estimate –5 months of BaBar LST work –1 month additional PEP support tube/SVT work A detailed integrated installation schedule for 2005 is needed for a more accurate time estimate including –LST installation –PEP support tube removal/reinstallation –A review of this schedule should be arranged for late in 2004
