ECTS credits ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System. Each stage of your programme is worth 60 ECTS credits. These are made up of modules, which are worth 5 or multiples of 5 ECTS credits. Each 5 credits is earned on the basis of 100 hours work. This means that you are expected to work for 1200 hours on each stage of your programme. Each semester is made up of: –12 contact weeks –1 review week during which many self-study hours should take place. –2 weeks during which examinations are held. Dividing this by the 30 weeks, this is 40 hours per week. For each 5 ECTS credits, you should spend 6.66 hours per week.

Where do the 100 hours come from? There are 12 contact weeks in each semester. If you sit a module that is held over a single semester, then the 100 hours should be completed during that semester. If you have 3 contact hours per week in a module for a semester, that makes up 36 hours. That would mean that you should do 64 study hours on this module.

What are self-study hours? Self-study hours can be made up of: –Studying for exams –Completing assignments –Researching around a taught topic. The way the self-study hours are used depends on the type of module it is and on the module tutor’s recommendations.

What self-study hours must we do? Semester 1: –Academic route: 21 contact hours / week, leaving 19 self-study hours per week –Internship: 34 contact hours per week, leaving 6 self-study hours per week Semester 2: –Academic route: 14 contact hours / week, leaving 26 self-study hours –Internship 30 contact hours / week, leaving 10 self-study hours.
