CIS607, Fall 2005 Semantic Information Integration Presentation by Shiwoong Kim Week 9 (Nov. 23)

Questions from Homework 7 Conceptss about EII. – Could you me an example of schemaless manner in EII?. I am not quietly understand between schema and schemaless manner. – DongHwi, Dayi – How much is the cost to duplicate data warehouse and EII? -- Zebin – If real-time is not that critical, we might update distributed data source and query data warehouse in real-time, and update data warehouse in the backend. Is this doable? -- Zebin

Questions from Homework 7 (cont ’ d) About the approaches in this paper ? – The idea of the schema imposed by the clients makes no sense to me. If the data is stored without any semantics behind it, a client is only able to use it if it uses the exact same underlying storage, no? Even so, there is effectively a schema inherent in the protocol which defines where particular data are stored. -- Enrico – I assume RDBMS is a database management system, and TPC a bench mark for Dbs? Pollock claims that data structures need formal semantics - isn’t this exactly this opposite of Ashish’s schema-less approach? -- Enrico

Questions from Homework 7 (cont ’ d) About the approaches in this paper ? (cont’d) – Has EII progressed far enough for people to seriously consider security issues? It seems like that has taken a back-burner in the literature. -- Paea – Even if a mediator is "efficient" will autonomous systems ever really trust peers enought to give them access? Who gets priority over system access and performance time? -- Paea – Query optimization is more difficult over distributed systems. Got a good example to illustrate this? -- Paea

Questions from Homework 7 (cont ’ d) Other questions. – Is there any research work being done on managing data supply chains? – Amanda – What are the problems with merging EAI and EII into EI? – Amanda, Dayi – What is federated query? -- Jiawei – Why schema-less approaches to information integration will lead to scalability and cost- effectiveness? -- Jiawei

Questions from Homework 7 (cont ’ d) Other questions. (cont’d) – So what is your opinion about the future market of EII. Will EII be prosperous or die? It is difficult for me to determine the future of EII after reading this article? – DongHwi Have a good Thanksgiving!
