3 U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration 1.Infrastructure & Materials - promotes cross-modal awareness of issues, topics and innovations affecting modes of transport and the conveyances that operates over them 2.Human Factors - focuses on the human interactions with infrastructure and conveyances that operates over them 3.Energy Sustainability - supports activities to develop and deploy next generation fuels as well as promote conservation and other innovations 4.Risk-Based Analysis to Address Safety Issues - shares cross-modal activities and advances to improve the safety of the nation's transportation systems 5.Data Driven Decision Making - shares cross-modal activities and advances to improve the information used for policy, regulatory and other federal transportation activities 6.Multimodal Intelligent Transportation Systems - focuses on enabling safe, interoperable wireless connectivity between vehicles, conveyances, infrastructure and passengers' devices to support safety, mobility and environmental enhancements 7.Livability - supports awareness and cooperation to increase choices for transportation users, provide affordable access to employment centers and other destinations, and enhance economic opportunities and quality of life for all Americans 8.Modeling and Simulation - supports awareness and cooperation on current data technologies to project future needs and trends as well as address emerging issues 9.Positioning, Navigation & Timing - promotes the research that best supports DOT as it leads the federal civilian agency efforts and cooperates with DoD on these important support services to GPS and similar technologies 10.Transportation Implication For an Aging Population and Those with Special Needs - addresses the research needs, issues and topics affecting these population segments 11.System Resilience and Global Logistics - focuses on recovery from natural and other disasters as well as freight issues and concerns 12.Policy Analysis - shares cross-modal activities and advances to improve the information used for policy, regulatory and other federal transportation activities 13.Travel Behavior - promotes cross-modal awareness of issues, topics and innovations affecting how people choose their travel and travel patterns 14.Economics - promotes the research technologies and information sources that best help the Department in addressing lifecycle and other key transportation economics issues and topics Science Based Clusters

U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration Definition Identified by the DOT RD&T Planning Team, clusters:  Define a set of common areas of scientific research that cut across modes and support DOT strategic goals  Provide a nexus around which DOT, UTC and other researchers will be connected to share ideas, project pursuits, issues and lessons learned about a specific research topic  Provide points of interest for consultation, connection, facilitation, coordination and collaboration on research activities  Are dynamic, flexible clusters in order to meet current and evolving research needs in the context of the Departmental Strategic Plan and its RD&T Strategic Plan Research Clusters – Overview

U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration Research Clusters – RITA Support  The Planning Team has identified researchers from your modes to begin these enhanced efforts  Types of RITA support for the clusters will include: □ Facilitate meetings, teleconferences and webinars to foster general information sharing □ Promote sharing of outcomes and outputs □ Facilitate discussion of cooperative efforts and opportunities for leveraging results and resources □ Disseminate information on accomplishments and upcoming events □ Identify links to useful information sites and stakeholders □ Use Web 2.0 technologies to support these activities including documents library, calendars, RSS feeds, etc. □ Sponsor special events on cluster or multi-cluster topics

U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration DOT Research Clusters  DOT Research Clusters □ DOT RD&T Planning Team identified clusters of needed research that apply across all modal administrations as well as researchers working in these areas. □ RITA is developing an external SharePoint site to facilitate collaboration across the transportation research enterprise – currently in beta testing with DOT researchers. □ Schedule being driven by Federal IT requirements, especially security ▪DOT -funded researchers (UTCs) – access early fall ▪External researchers (state DOTs) – access late fall/early winter □ Anticipate webinars and other forums to facilitate enterprise collaboration in these research areas. RITA moving to provide online coordination and collaboration tools – with valued input from RAC/Research Coordination and Collaboration Task Force We’re excited about how this is going to help us all do our jobs better

U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration DOT Research Program and Project Management Site  DOT Research Program and Project Management (RPPM) □ Development of the AASHTO RAC Research Coordination and Collaboration Task Force’s site coincided with RITA’s external Sharepoint developmentwww.transportationresearch.org □ RAC RCC site migrated to in May 2010www.transportationresearch.gov ▪Content now being enhanced by a RAC RCC subcommittee ▪5 major site areas, including team collaboration □ Anticipated improvements before going live: ▪Adding links to/from Research Clusters sites ▪Matching Research Clusters page design ▪Hosting international team research project RITA collaborating with the community to provide a central site for online coordination and collaboration tools for research project and program managers The RPPM site is a great complement to the Research Clusters’ topical focus
