A Program for the preparation of teachers in the middle grades should address: KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS CONTENT THE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS THE LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS THE LEARNER OF MATHEMATICS SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

Current FSU Middle Grades Education Program The B. S. in Middle Grades Education, requires credit hours, comprised of the following: University College Core…. 51 Credits Professional Education Courses…23 Credits Middle Grades Major Courses..….18 Credits Second Academic Concentration Courses…36-39 Credits

Current FSU Middle Grades Education Program At FSU Middle Grades Education Majors must choose two second academic concentrations from the following:  Mathematics  Science  Language Arts  Social Studies  Special Education  Reading  Core Academic Studies Mathematics Second Academic Concentration includes:  Pre-Calculus I & II  Calculus I  Calculus II  Discrete Mathematics  Linear Algebra  Basic Probability & Statistics  Modern Geometry  Methods Course in Middle Grades Mathematics

Enhancement of Current FSU Middle Grades Mathematics Program Revise course syllabi, course content and develop and/or redesign courses to reflect recommendations of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) for the Mathematical Education of Teachers (MET 2001) and the NCTM (2000) Principals and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM) Conduct on-going workshops for mathematics and education faculty using MET and PSSM documents which include the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points

Enhancement of Current FSU Middle Grades Mathematics Program Redesign the field experience of middle grades mathematics majors in the local Professional Development Schools (PDS) Set-up a mentoring program for middle grades mathematics majors Enrich the technology literacy of middle grades mathematics majors
