How to use the CD Writer Gina Honeysett Research and Graduate School of Education

Welcome to the Presentation Hi, my name is Kermit and welcome to this presentation of the CD Writer. All this new technology is too advanced for me, so I will now hand you over to Gina to explain the rest! Happy Learning!

Types of CD * There are 2 main types of CD. The CDR (recordable) and the CDRW (re-writable) * After data has been written to the CDR it cannot be removed. The data is permanently fixed. * After data has been written to the CDRW it can be erased by laser and new information stored. The data is temporarily fixed.

Programmes for using the CD Writer  Easy CD Creator.  Direct CD

Easy CD Creator  “Adaptec Easy CD creator lets you create your own data, audio and multimedia CDs from within Windows 95 or Windows NT. You can back up important files to CD, and read them back on standard CD-ROM drives.” (Adaptec,Inc.)

How to use Easy CD Creator  Click on Start, then Programs and select the CD Writer option.  Within this option you can choose Easy CD Creator.

 You are presented with a split horizontal screen, with Windows Explorer Data in the top half, and an area for files to be inserted in the bottom half.

 Drag the files you require from the top right hand side of the page to the bottom left. They will appear on the bottom right.  Then click on File, and Create CD.

Data transfer from many sources  If you are trying to write many files onto the CD from many different sources, you may wish to create a CD Image. This simply allows for all the separate data to be stored in one specific location to be transferred continuously onto the CD.  Select File, and Create disk image. This allows you to amalgamate all the files you intend to send to the CD.  After this, select File, Create CD from disk image, instead of Create CD.

Direct CD  Direct CD requires the CDR or CDRW to be formatted in advance. This can take up to 90 minutes to format.  However once formatted, the process is the same speed at Easy CD Creator for transferring data.

Direct CD ctd  “Direct CD is software for Windows 95 that allows your CD-R drive to appear on your desktop, just like any other volume. Your CD-R drive will handle files just like a hard drive or floppy disk. You can ‘drag and drop’ files to your CD, thereby writing them one at a time, rather than recording the entire disk at once.” (Adaptec, Inc)

How to use Direct CD : Select Start, Programs, CD Writer, and then Direct CD. : You will be presented with a CD Wizard where you follow the instructions for formatting your CD, and transferring data to it. : Once in the Direct CD Programme simply drag and drop the required files from your computer to the CD location. The CD is created automatically.

CDR or CDRW?  It is not required to specify to the computer which CD you will be using. The programme identifies the CD type for you automatically.  CDRs can be written on a CD Writer and read by any CD Rom drive or CD Player.  CDRWs can be written on a CD Rewriter but cannot always be read by a CD Rom drive or CD Player. They can be read by many recent CD Rom drives (within approximately a year old).  The GRSE CD Writer is both a rewritable and recordable device.

Erasing a CDRW  With both Easy CD Creator and Direct CD there are options for erasing data from the CDRW.  Simply select the CDRW erase option and follow the instructions provided.  For erasing the CDR, the process is simpler. Find a bin, throw it in and buy another one!!

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
