Future Teachers Guide to College Success and Survival Guide to Internships and Practicums Internships and Practicums

Who We Are? Laurie Gentry-Goodale, Senior at USC Elementary Education and FEA President. Jennifer Pepin, Junior at USC Early Childhood Education and FEA Secretary.

Regular Class Attendance Make connections between different elements of the class material Getting class notes from a friend is not as useful Attendance and Participation will be reflected in your final grade.

Leave Distractions at the Door No personal drama in the classroom. Cell phones should be silenced; never set to vibrate or ringtones! Texting is the same as “passing a note”. Be considerate of your classmates and instructors.

Complete Assignments Keep up with the reading! Do your homework. Don’t procrastinate on projects and papers.

What’s your learning style? Do you learn best by –Listening? –Speaking? –Singing? –Reading? –Relating? –Moving? –Doing?

Why are we learning this? Familiarize yourself with learning theories and state standards –Piaget –Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences –

Lose the Attitude Acknowledge your professor’s expertise. Ask questions when you have them. Get your (or your parents) money’s worth!

Get Involved Establish relationships with your professors, advisors, and peers – they are your campus support group! Join a student group to make professional connections and receive greater support.

Practice Makes Perfect! Know what you’re getting yourself into. Look for opportunities to gain hands-on experience: –Summer Camps –After School Programs –Day Care or Preschool Settings –Baby Sitting

I’m going to a school! What now?

I am going to a school … what now? Before your first day find out where your school is.

I am going to a school … what now? Drive the route to see how long it will take you to get there.

What Should I take with me? Pens and Markers Art Supplies Digital Camera Notebook

What Should I Not Take With Me… Cell Phones

What do I Wear??? Follow the “too” rule –Not too short –Not too tight –Not too low cut – Not too revealing Keep toes in

Good Options Khaki Pants Black Pants Knee length skirts No Jeans Clean, comfortable shoes Knit Pull-over shirts Button front shirts Cover body art and piercings

Your First Day Be On Time Better yet be early. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

What do I do the first day? Plan an Introductory Activity with the students. (A read aloud) Game from the morning meeting book. your cooperating teacher ahead of time. Find out what they will be working on and find an appropriate read aloud to correspond with it.

Communicate with your cooperating teacher. Take the initiative first… Don’t wait on them Find out what is expected out of you in the classroom. What role will you play?

What do I do other days? Don’t wait to be asked to do something –Insist that you are involved Let you cooperating teacher know that you are willing to make cut outs, help with a bulletin board, make copies, tutor a group of students, or facilitate a book club.

Important things to remember. You are not the students friend. You are their teacher. Take Pictures for your own portfolio. Photograph activities you have them do. Photograph student worksheets.

From a Principal's point of view.
