ECE 353 – Fall 2005 ECE 353 Fall 2005 – GoLogic Tutorial Presented by: Ben Lapointe Ben Doherty

ECE 353 Fall ’05 – GoLogic Presentation – Ben Doherty and Ben Lapointe What is a Logic Analyzer?  Tool to examine how a digital system operates Creates waveforms to visualize output  Can find system errors and instabilities  Better at analyzing digital systems than an oscilloscope Oscilloscope will show continuous voltage Logic analyzer shows discrete logic levels

ECE 353 Fall ’05 – GoLogic Presentation – Ben Doherty and Ben Lapointe How Does a Logic Analyzer Work?  Input channels are sampled with a “sampling clock,” which can be between 1KHz and 500Mhz  Samples are assigned a logical value (high or low) if they fall above or below a certain “threshold voltage”  Digitized samples can be viewed as a waveform or a text output

ECE 353 Fall ’05 – GoLogic Presentation – Ben Doherty and Ben Lapointe Basic Steps  Start GoLogic  Connect the channels  Configure the logic analyzer The “View Setup” button  Press the ‘Go’ button  Analyze waveforms  Tutorial Video Tutorial Video

ECE 353 Fall ’05 – GoLogic Presentation – Ben Doherty and Ben Lapointe Logic Analyzer Tips  Use long leads  Make bundles of different color wires to keep leads sane  NEVER bend the logic analyzer connectors: Wires should fit in snugly without bending Bending could cause fatigue and result in a broken connector

ECE 353 Fall ’05 – GoLogic Presentation – Ben Doherty and Ben Lapointe Remember  Logic analyzers are very expensive pieces of equipment ($3,000) Treat them nicely  When your system is not working as expected, the logic analyzer is your best friend  Logic analyzer for digital signals, oscilloscope (or multimeter) for analog signals
