Conclusions WLAN networks are affordable and popular for the last mile. WLAN technology is not yet mature –Need for speed, reliability, security, range, lower costs, interoperability, QoS etc. Also other competing/supporting wired network technologies (Fiber, Ethernet, …) New network models are emerging –Community networks –Public multi-ISP networks Demand for public and affordable local networks.

Conclusions Commercial usability is vital. Different network options: –Commercial single-ISP networks Advantageous only for the ISPs? –Community networks (Seattle Wireless etc.) Commercial usability/reliability? –Public access systems StockholmOpen.net Wireless Lappeenranta HelsinkiOpen.net Regional networks In practice, most of the networks are a combination of previous options.

Conclusions Publicity will be in a key role –Public access networks will be strong. –Publicity offers new opportunities for everyone Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Service providers End users Neutral network manager City and the local area Need for services and content!
