Deployment Tools Microsoft Deployment Solution Accelerator Note: new, renamed version replaced Business Desktop Deployment Solution 2007 (BDD) in December 2007 Brings together best practices and deployment tools Guidance, sample templates, and technology files (such as scripts and configuration files) Tools: Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT), Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT), Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK), Windows Deployment Services, and Windows PE 2.0 3

Imaging Tools Windows Imaging (WIM) –New to Vista Replaces old setup process based on CAB files Can be stored on any media, use anything bootable –USB Keys, PXE boot from network Uses Windows PE –Basic environment to load OS and support troubleshooting »Supports TCP/IP »Will run some Windows GUI programs »Supports Active Directory logons »Easier to access network resources 8

ImageX ImageX.exe - Command Line Tool –Mount, create, and modify images –Use in Windows or Windows PE –Command line switches /mount, /unmount, /append, etc –Create image to apply to many computers Customized with drivers, software, and settings 9

Deployment Options Use the Network –Load image from a file share Windows Deployment server –Use PXE boot from BIOS and Windows Deployment on Windows Server 2003/2008 to manage deployment in the enterprise DVD media USB key drive –Just load WIM image to USB key 10
