Pertemuan 10 Past habits Matakuliah: Writing 1 Tahun: Versi: 6

Learning Outcomes By the end of this session the students are expected to be able to: –Use the form “used to” to describe a habit in the past

Outline of the materials “used to” –Statements –Questions and negatives The difference between “used to” and “to be used to”

Used to “Used to” expresses a past situation or habit that no longer exists at present. Example: I used to live with my parents. Now I live in my own house. Ann used to be afraid of dogs, but now she likes them.

Question and Negative forms Questions: –Did you use to smoke when you were a teenager? –Didn’t you use to live in Tebet? Negatives: –We didn’t use to drink coffee at breakfast. –I never used to drink coffee at brekfast, but now I always have coffee at breakfast.

There is a huge difference between –I used to take buses to school. –I am used to taking buses to school. The first sentence means that the person no longer takes buses to school. The second sentence means that the person has no problem with taking buses because he does that all the time until now. –Note: the form is S +to be + used to + V-ing To be/get used to

Conclusions “used to” expresses past habit. It does not apply to the present situation. “to be/get used to”, in contrast, applies to actions that still happens. It is used to express something that the subject doesn’t mind because of repeated experience. –Sally didn’t cry when the parents left because she is used to being left alone at home.
