Adding “ed” and “ing”

When making a word past tense, you usually add “ed to the word without changing the way the base word is spelled. Example: cover = covered Sometimes, you have to add “ing” to words so that they make sense in a sentence. Usually, you do not have to change the base words spelling. Example: visit = visiting

If the base word ends in “e”, you will drop the “e” before adding “ed” or “ing” Examples: Amuse = amusing Decide = decided

If the base word only has one syllable and it ends with a vowel and single consonant, you will double the last letter before adding “ed” or “ing” Examples: Stop = stopped vc Plan = planning

If the word has one syllable and ends in one vowel and an x, you will not double the x like you do the other consonants. Example: Mix = mixed vc Fix = fixing
