RGS Campus Training Lunchtime Address Clayton Hall January 9, 2008

RGS News Cordell Overby, Associate Provost for Research to join RGS 1/14/07 Compliance Training and comprehensive internal audits underway—new area of focus as seen from today’s offerings

RGS Goals Advancing the Financial System through advocacy and support Meeting with the ‘customer’ more to enhance the service provided by RGS Prepare to support the growth in research expected from strategic plan

Expenditure History

What does this mean? The overall FY2008 Federal research budget is bleak –National Science Foundation: an increase of 2.5 % –Department of Energy Office of Science: Once earmarks are factored out the increase is only 2.6 %. –National Institutes of Health: Budget will increase less than 0.5 % Fairly flat trajectory—you can help –Awareness of burn rate –Limit unnecessary no cost extensions

More factors New complexities in proposals—need more lead time when possible –Multi-investigator –Multi-institutional

Sponsors varied needs Keep in mind that new sponsors have new needs Old sponsors sometimes have NEW language—awareness of new regulations and nuances a must

RGS Departments Faculty

Introduce Keynote Address It is my great pleasure to introduce my colleague, Robert Specter. Serving as the VP for Finance since February 2007, he is new to UD, but not new to the world of Academia or to Finance.

Pieces of the pie

Thank you all for attending today's very enlightening offerings It is so important that we gather together and spend time focusing on the new information and learning from each other. I know we are all busy and appreciate the time you are taking to continue to improve the comprehensive services to the research enterprise. With the emphasis being on growth and change in the next short term and certainly from the strategic plan initiatives, we thought it would be good to hear from 2 people who will be instrumental in the growth of research in the immediate future.

Dr. Thoroughgood, whom many of you know, has served as the Vice Provost for Research & Graduate Studies since Prior to her current post, she served as Dean of the College of Marine Studies for 20 years. Her long history at the University of Delaware gives her a unique perspective on the current state of research and an insight to the dynamic nature of the research enterprise. Without further delay, I ask that you join me in welcoming Vice Provost Thoroughgood to the podium.
