Their appeal is immediate and apparent! An institutional repository is a way for every academic institution to ‘showcase’ its intellectual prowess through the systematic collection, organization, making accessible and preservation of its intellectual output. Launched in the fall of 2002 : Purpose: To enhance the visibility and impact of Canadian scholarly output and Canadian research institutions by building a number of robust, content-rich university-based repositories that will form part of a larger federation of institutional repositories worldwide. CARL Institutional Repository Project: Institutional Repositories A Review of Content Recruitment Strategies Access Preconference, 2006

1.To gain an understanding of the steps involved and obstacles encountered in setting up an IR so that other Canadian institutions can benefit from our experience. 2.To identify and share best practices and lessons learned with each other for the implementation of institution repositories. 3.To establish a “proof of concept” for institutional repositories in the Canada. Some conclusions: Institutional Repositories A Review of Content Recruitment Strategies The ego factor works! Learn to speak the language of the research community Don’t rely on the researcher for self-archiving? (be prepared to find and deposit items, assign metadata and check copyright agreements) Access Preconference, 2006

Some more conclusions: Institutional Repositories A Review of Content Recruitment Strategies Content recruitment costs money. The most effective strategy is to mandate archiving, but even with that, IR staff must expect to continue to actively recruit and assist in depositing. Short-term strategies work in the short term only. Sustainable solutions require long-term commitments. Access Preconference, 2006
