RCE International Conference Communications Session Brendan Barrett UNU Media Studio

Our World 2.0 explores the interaction between climate, oil and food Shows how people are making a difference. Peaking oil, rising food prices, climate induced disasters create fear, panic and protest Our understanding is limited Information is limited.....

Education for sustainable development needs to present a vision of post-fossil fuel, low carbon future That is wealthy, comfortable and peaceful. People need hope... They need to believe that things can change.

The RCE communications strategy should be based on this premise The rapid transformation of Our World in the next couple of decades Go renewable, go local, conserve, innovate, invest, promote collective action, support positive transitions

We need to make an immense effort, from today, to break out from business as usual

So far, we have 55 Regional Centres of Expertise (at this rate, there could be nearly 200 by the end of the Decade) If there are 50 people associated with each RCE, then by 2014, we will have reached 10,000 people. But if there are 10,000 associated with each RCE, we will have reached 2 million. Is that good enough?

Can we be more creative?

Some suggestions Use the web To connect people To share knowledge To create networks and to link with other networks To plan and coordinate your activities To communicate with society To reduce your travel and carbon footprint And give you more time to work in your local community bringing about the transition on the ground

Create a blog for each RCE with a news feed

Subscribe to each others news feeds

Create social networking website(s) Get to know each other Invite others to join Widen the circle

Write for the public, make your news easy to understand and relevant Create alliances with other sources of Green news? Syndicate your news...

Share your pictures via Flickr Share your videos via YouTube, Vimeo etc. Put your content where the audience is, don’t wait for people to find you.....

Use basecamp or something similar to collaborate, share and plan activities

Last, but not least, Work with the UNU to promote Our World 2.0

Thank you
