CSU Chico Web Site A Unified approach to Governance, Management, and Accessibility

Why do we care? The University web site is the prime tool for projecting the University image to potential students, alumni and other external audiences The University web site is a critical internal and external tool for information sharing and University business University web pages are proliferating beyond our capacity to keep them consistent, current, and accessible. University web pages are now part of a complex technical architecture

Web Governance Structure

Strategic Direction and Policy Information Technology Executive Committee (ITEC) ITEC will establish the overall strategic framework for Chico’s web presence. Specifically the committee’s role is to: Determine the strategic objectives of the Chico’s public web presence. Set appropriate policy to support an effective and consistent web presence.

Management Web Management Committee The Committee will be responsible for implementing and managing a web infrastructure and design that meets the objectives set by ITEC. Specifically the committee will: Establish and oversee a Web Design Team that will develop a new web design and information architecture that meets the established web site goals. Establish and oversee a Web Content Committee that will assure appropriate content of the University’s web presence. Assure that Chico’s web site meets the Accessible Technology Initiative goals. Develop and manage a plan to implement a Web Content Management System. Approve standards and guidelines for managing public web pages at CSU, Chico. Recommend policy to ITEC policy as required to meet the objectives of the CSU, Chico web site.

Design Web Design Team The Web Design Team will be responsible for developing a public web presence that meets the goals established by the University. Specifically they will: Design a University web site that supports University goals in an effective, attractive, and accessible manner. Design a University web site and information architecture that provides consistent navigation down to the level determined by ITEC. Propose technical guidelines for campus supported web pages.

Design Web Design Team Membership to be established by the Web Management Committee

Web Content Web Content Committee The Web Content Committee will be responsible for assuring that appropriate content appears on Chico’s web site in a manner that meets the University’s objectives. Specifically they will: Review Web-based information for currency and relevance. Coordinate links to Web-based information and ensure they are consistently applied across the University. Require that Web-based information meets University quality standards. Provide advice and feedback to the Web Design Team on both the design and information architecture of the University Web site. Provide advice and feedback to the Web Management Committee on policy and goals of the University Web site.

Unified Approach to the Chico Web Site

Timeline The following is a rough timeline of an implementation process. The exact timeline will be developed as the ITEC and the Management Committee decide on the scope of the project. September 2007 – Cabinet approves governance structure (Done) November/December 2007 – WCMS is selected for campus wide implementation. (Done) February 2008 – Management Committee meets to: Develop a process for achieving overall design, technical, and ATI goals. Establish initial design team membership Establish initial Content Committee membership Feb/March 2008 – Project plan is developed that brings together ATI (accessibility), web site redesign, and implementation of a Web Content Management System. February/March 2008 – WCMS is installed

Timeline June 2008 – First pilot WCMS sites are tested Sept 2008 – Goals for the University web site are proposed by the Management Committee and approved by ITEC. July/August 2008 – User Training for pilots on the new WCMS Sept/October 2008 – First drafts of a new University Web site are reviewed by the Content Committee October/Nov 2008 – Web policy set by ITEC that establishes the scope and depth of the University Web site. January/Feb 2009 – New Web site design finalized March 2009 – Begin transition to new Web site May 2009 – All administrative (includes colleges, departments, and other units) Web pages comply with policy, design, and accessibility
