1 MICE Funding Agency Committee PM report Overview Organisation and project management Schedule reconstruction The Step IV subsystems Andy Nichols, STFC, FAC,

Overview Muon beamline reliable, decay solenoid, magnets and detectors working routinely Target development is going very well, Re-engineered configuration now accepted by ISIS as baseline – a crucial step FC #1 manufacture is progressing well, first coil wound, delivery Q3/4, 2011 Spectrometer solenoids – re-working underway, new confidence in delivery dates (June 2012) 2MVA substation upgrade – completed ahead of schedule and working PPS - now in use First EMR planes installed in June, running successfully right now Coupling magnets, first coil wound, test is critical to future plans and decision points, test in US likely, CC delivery plan must be addressed urgently 2

Organisation and Project Management Some changes to the project management: UK project re-modelled: UK Project Manager - Alan Grant, DL System Engineer RAL – Tim Hayler Project Associate – Andy Lintern MICE Project: Project Manager – Andy Nichols Integration Engineer – Jason Tarrant Schedule co-ordinator – Gail Hanson MICE Magnet co-ordination team Engineering – Roy Preece – resident at LBNL since April 1st Magnetic – Mike Courthold – based at RAL Very unfortunately the Hall Manager, Willie Spensley departed in May. AN is default, supported by Vishal Francis. This is an unsatisfactory arrangement.....! Vital that STFC fills the vacancy – this is a major safety liability 3

Reconstructing the schedule Now accepted that we go straight to Step IV More subsystem detail has been added to top level schedule – see later Aim is to achieve some running with Step V before long ISIS shutdown in August 2014 This is not a firm commitment; it’s critically dependent on the Coupling Coil delivery programme But if running is not possible with Step V, the project will consider moving to Step VI as soon as possible after the shutdown to advance the schedule 4

MICE Top-Level Project Schedule Step IV Step V Revision date: 17 th June, 2011 Note: items in red text are key schedule drivers Items in orange text are high risk items Items in Green text are complete 5

Step IV subsystems Spectrometer solenoids 8 Workshop held in LBNL during May Collected all known information on the spectrometer solenoids Focussed on: Quench protection/detection Heat load calculations Assembly/MLI application Manpower Shipping Representation from s/sol review committee, LBNL team and MIT staff Most issues are closed now, delivery plan very well constructed and credible Repair has effectively begun Courtesy, Steve Virostek

Step IV subsystems Spectrometer solenoid 9 What are we doing? Better understanding of 4.2K heatload: Pumping capability and monitoring improved Better instrumentation Vent lines baffled MLI on cold mass improved Radiation shield made of higher conductivity (1100) series alum Better connections of rad. shield to first stage of CCRs 5+1 cooler configuration accepted as baseline Engineering drawings and 3D CAD models rigorously updated - now we know where we are starting from

Step IV subsystems Spectrometer Solenoid 10 Definitive 5+1 CCR layout

Steve Virostek -- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory -- July 6, 2011 MICE Spectrometer Solenoid Update Page 11 Manpower Steve Gourlay – LBNL AFRD Division Director -LBNL technical contact for Spectrometer Solenoid and Coupling Coil magnets -oversight of the LBNL Spectrometer Solenoid team -contact for the DOE Office of High Energy Physics Steve Virostek - Sr. Mechanical Engineer -overall project management -some oversight of magnet assembly and training -documentation Tapio Niinikoski - Sr. Cryogenic Engineer -CERN retiree, hired 1/2 time by LBNL -magnet design analysis and modification -some oversight of magnet assembly and training -magnet training oversight Dennis Calais - Cryogenic Technician -on site at Wang NMR during assembly -Mainly working on instrumentation and cryocoolers Roy Preece - Mechanical Engineer (RAL) -oversight of magnet assembly -magnet training oversight -integration and documentation Nanyang Li - Mechanical Engineer -oversight of magnet assembly -magnet training oversight -documentation Soren Prestemon - Cryogenic Engineer -magnet design analysis -design modification recommendations -occasional oversight of magnet assy Heng Pan - Cryogenic Postdoc -quench analysis -radiation shield eddy current and force analysis The following individuals are part of the Spectrometer Solenoid team: Revised manpower plan This is great news – a major step forward

Step IV subsystems AFC module 12 FC #1 is in final stages at Tesla Engineering Coil is wound, experts agree that it went very well Cryocooler performance is being physically verified now - important Some design issues with outer vac vessel and cold mass supports need sorting out Tesla are re-organising their staffing on the project, good news Plan to ship to RAL around September/October 2011 Initial testing, powering and mapping will be in building R9 Absorber module #1 was delivered form KEK last month, effectively ready for use – now in safe storage Courtesy, Tom Bradshaw

Step IV subsystems AFC module 13

Step IV subsystems Liquid hydrogen delivery system 14 Four parallel activities going very well: R&D vessel, pipe and valve work in MICE hall Venting, vacuum and extraction system outside Control engineering Safety planning and admin R&D vessel now installed and liquefying helium successfully Process now entirely operated by the control system – great effort from DL group Exterior work well underway – large fans have been tested, most civil engineering work is done Safety & Admin: Successful LHe test needed for input to Hydrogen safety case Pre-operation safety review being organised now, aiming for later this year Formal monthly exchange with ISIS Safety Courtesy, Matt Hills
