Vocabulary Review Terms and Diagrams taken from “Harcourt Multimedia Math Glossary” By Megan Stussi, Eric Wilkinson and Jesse Walker

Angle A geometric figure formed by two rays that have a common endpoint rays

Arc A portion of a circle A semicircle is an arc that is one- half of a circle.

C = π x d The distance around a circlecircle C = 2π x r Circumference

Area The size of a surface The number of square units needed to cover a given surfacesquare Example: The area is 9 square units.

Area Square A = side x side Rectangle A = base x height A = length x width Triangle A = ½ (base x height)

Area Trapezoid A = ½ (base 1 + base 2 ) x height Circle A = π x radius 2

The number of cubic units needed to occupy a given space Volume of a cube: volume = side 3 The volume of the cube is 8 cubic units. Volume of a rectangular prism: V = (length) (width) (height) Volume

Chord A line segment connecting two points located on the circle.

Coordinate Plane A plane formed by a horizontal line (x-axis)planeline that intersects a vertical line (y-axis)intersects at a point called the originpoint

Radius A line segment with one endpoint at the center of a circle and the other endpoint on the circleline segmentcenter of a circle

A line segment through the center of a circle, with endpoints on the circle Equal to twice the radius ab is a diameter of the circle. Diameter

Perimeter The distance around a polygonpolygon Perimeter = side 1 + side 2 + side 3 ….. P = 2 cm + 3 cm + 3 cm = 8 cm Perimeter of a square: p = 4 x side Perimeter of a rectangle: p = 2b + 2h

Pi π The ratio of the circumference of a circle to the length of its diameterratiocircumference circlediameter Pi ≈ 3.14 Or Pi ≈ … (to the first 50 decimal places)

Quadrilateral A four-sided polygonpolygon Examples:
