Life Cycle of a Frog By Irene So 2 nd Grade

2 nd Grade State Standard  SCIENCE (Life Sciences)  B. Students know the sequential stages of life cycles are different for different animals such as butterflies, frogs, and mice.

Stage 1: Egg  The eggs are laid in water or wet places  Several thousand eggs are laid at once  The eggs are surrounded by a jelly-like covering to protect the egg  The egg begins as a single cell and continues to multiply

Stage 2: Tadpole  After 21 days, a tadpole emerges from the jelly and attaches itself onto a weed  The tadpole has an extremely long tail  It feeds on algae from anywhere to 3 days to 3 weeks until it can break free into the water

Stage 3: Froglet  After about 5 weeks, the tadpole begins to grow hindlegs and forelegs  Their tail becomes smaller and smaller and they start to develop lungs  The tadpole is able to move freely and catch food

Stage 4: Frog  After 11 weeks, the tail has completely disappeared and the lungs are fully developed  The adult frog will spend most of it’s time on land and eat insects and worms  Eventually, this frog will find a mate and the cycle will begin all over again
