Engineering our buildings An “Active Leaning Lab” for Engineering The Liverpool Engineer

Engineering our buildings Today’s agenda Brief – Professor Peter Goodhew, Departmental client for the ALL The competition and its deliverables – Torsten Schmiedeknecht

Engineering our buildings Now – a reminder of how it is!

Engineering our buildings

What the ALL will be used for: CDIO Up to 250 students at a time, usually in teams of 4 or 5 Conceptual design (sketching, brainstorming) Detailed design (CAD, calculation) Implementation (models, prototypes, machining, finishing, decorating) Operation (testing, use, competition)

Engineering our buildings What the ALL will be used for: other activity Summer schools (e.g. A Level, UCAS applicants) Formula student car(s) “Two week aeroplane” Training in use of tools and machines Project work – final year or two years; individual, pairs or teams MSc projects – lasting 5 months including the summer

Engineering our buildings Other issues There are five years of students at any time (3 year BEng, 4 year MEng plus 1 year MSc) Total student population is about 900, every one of whom will use the lab in some way. Safety is very important – some machines can only be used under supervision Students will work with wood, metal, foam, plastics, paints and electronic components There will be a separate CSD computing suite elsewhere in the buildings Wireless networking will be entirely feasible

Engineering our buildings What we really want To inspire our students to be creative, rigorous, imaginative and hard-working To inspire staff to want to work in a stimulating environment

Engineering our buildings The stakeholder groups Students (principally u/g and Masters) Academic staff using the Active Learning Lab (ALL) for teaching Technical staff providing help and training Administrative staff keeping records of use (CSD computing facility) (Research groups) (B&E, Operational services etc etc)

Engineering our buildings The briefing document You have the brief on paper This presentation can be found on my web site at pcwww.liv.ac.uk/~goodhew
