iGEM2009 SHORT COURSE Lesson1 Introduction to iGEM and Synthetic Biology

什麼是合成生物學 ?? Synthetic biology is an emerging area of research that can broadly be described as - the design and construction of novel artificial biological pathways, organisms or devices, or -the redesign of existing natural biological systems. YM-Bioinfo What is Synthetic Biology?

1. 傳統的生物學 Reverse engineering: Taking apart sequenced whole genomes through cross-genome comparison to see how they work. 2. 合成生物學 Forward engineering: Design and build engineered biological systems to test biological hypothesis. Engineering approaches to the study of biological sciences

8 什麼是 iGEM??  It is an abbreviation of the "international Genetically Engineered Machine" competition.  It is organized by Massachusetts Institute of Technology  It is a Synthetic Biology competition of students.  The objective of iGEM competition is to imagine, engineer, and assemble an engineered biological system using DNA parts.  the completed project will then be presented at iGEM jamboree in Boston in November.

Timeline 2003 MIT class 2004 MIT class 2004 Synthetic Biology Competition (5 teams, 1 country) iGEM 2005 (13 teams, 4 countries) iGEM 2006 (37 teams, 15 countries) iGEM 2008 (85 teams registered, 24 countries) iGEM 2007 (54 teams, 19 countries) We are Here!!

Wiki A wiki is a web application that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. Wiki also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website

Feature of Wiki Allow users to free create and edit web page content using any web browser Allow a user to add content, like Internet forum, but the content to be edited by any other user Supports hyperlinks Can create new pages and crosslink between internal pages
