Energy Dense Power Systems Field Testing with Power 8 Lithium Ion Battery Box Test Results June 2009 Fridge Freeze 15qt Blood Cooler Performed for SOCOM/Ft Bragg
Test Protocol #1 Blood Cooler and Lithium Ion Battery Box tested inside lab. No exposure to temperature swings. Ambient temp during test F. Cooler at room temp at start of test. Cooler opened at 4hr intervals (15 seconds) for duration of test. Fully charged Power 8 Battery Box begins powering Tuesday, June 16 th, 8:30 PM. Test terminated Thursday, June 18 th, 10:30 PM RESULTS Cooler draw of 3.2 amp, random cycle times, Internal cooler temp maintained at 40 F, measured with SOCOM supplied temperature probe. Interior walls measure 32-29F with IR temp gauge. Power 8 Lithium Ion Battery Box operated cooler for 50 hr, over 21% charge remaining at termination of test (Potential additional 12 hr).
Test Protocol #2 Blood cooler and Lithium Ion Battery Box tested outside in full sun, (exposed to elements). Cooler at room temp at start of test. Cooler opened at 4 hr intervals (15 seconds) for duration of test. Fully charged Power 8 Battery Box begins powering Friday June 19 th, 8:30 AM, test terminated Sunday June 21 st, 10:30 AM. RESULTS Cooler draw 3.1 amp, random cycle times Internal cooler temp maintained 40 F, measured with SOCOM supplied temp probe. Interior walls measure 29-32F with IR temp gauge. Power 8 Lithium Ion Battery Box operated cooler for 50 hr, over 9% charge remaining at termination of test. (potential additional 4.5 hr).
Test Protocol #3 Blood cooler and Lithium Ion battery Box tested outside in full sun, (exposed to elements) Same as Test Protocol #2. One 60w solar panel connected to Power 8 to supplement energy consumption of blood cooler. Fully charged Power 8 Lithium Ion Battery Box begins powering Monday June 22 nd, 8:30 AM, test terminated Monday June 22 nd, 8:30 PM. RESULTS Maximum solar charge input recorded 39W, (solar charge limited to cloudy/overcast conditions). On average 7 sun hours at 39W are needed a day for indefinite operation. Even with only 4 hours of solar panel operation a day, run-time would be extended to 109 hours.
CONCLUSIONS Power 8 Lithium Ion Battery Box is completely compatible with portable blood cooler provided by SOCOM. Power 8 will dramatically increase runtime of tested unit, (reduced monitoring of power supply, and reliance on recharge) Power 8 is significantly lighter than lead acid systems available, (increased portability for field personnel) Use of solar recharge can greatly reduce need for grid connectivity.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS Power 8 units are UN/DOT compliant for commercial flight (nonhaz) perfect for first responders. Power 8 units are capable of receiving all or part of existing power from BA2590 and BA5590.
