The Name of Jesus Stephen Cook

The Gospel of Jesus Jesus went throughout the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. (Matt 4:23; 9:35)

The Gospel of Jesus Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:14-15)

The Gospel of Jesus "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent." (Luke 4:43)

The Gospel of Jesus And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matt 24:14)

The preaching of the Apostles (the kerygma) But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. (Acts 8:12)

The kerygma kerygma is the Greek word used in the NT for "preaching" and is the technical theological term generally used to describe what Jesus or the apostles publically preached rather than what they may have believed or taught privately.

The kerygma The kerygma as summarized by C.H. Dodd from Peter’s speeches in Acts : The Age of Fulfillment has dawned, the “latter days” foretold by the prophets. This has taken place through the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By virtue of the resurrection Jesus has been exalted at the right hand of God as Messianic head of the new Israel. The Holy Spirit in the church is the sign of Christ’s present power and glory. The Messianic Age will reach its consummation in the return of Christ. An appeal is made for repentance with the offer of forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and salvation. The Apostolic Preaching and Its Developments (1936)

The death of Jesus in the Acts of the Apostles "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." (Acts 2:36 ) "Then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed." (Acts 4:10)

The Name of the Lord Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' (Matt 7:22) The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." (Luke 10:17)

The Name of the Lord In Damascus Paul preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. (Acts 9:27)

The Name of the Lord Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out” … they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. " (Acts 19:13, 17)

The Name of the Lord Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. (Acts 16:18)

The Name of the Lord "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

The Name of the Lord The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:16) On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:5) So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. (Acts 10:48)

The Name of the Lord Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." (Acts 3:6) By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. (Acts 3:16)

The Name of the Lord Know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (Acts 4:10) Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus. (Acts 4:30)

The Name of the Lord But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor 6:11)

In the name of Jesus … Preaching Baptising Healing Exorcism

The Name of the Lord When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present … (1 Cor 5:4)

Calling upon the Name of the Lord To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ - their Lord and ours (1 Cor 1:2)

Calling on the Name of the Lord Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Acts 2:21) "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Rom 10:13)

Calling upon the Name of the Lord While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." (Acts 7:59) Greek: epikaloumenon kai legonta Literally, “called upon and said …”

Calling upon the Name of the Lord Ananias answered … “he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name." (Acts 9:14) "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? (Acts 9:21) [Ananias to Saul] “Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” (Acts 22:16)

Calling upon the Name of the Lord The phrase “to call upon the name of the Lord” is derived directly from the Old Testament usage, where it functions as a technical expression designating prayer and sacrifice offered specifically to Yahweh. Larry Hurtado, Lord Jesus Christ Professor of NT language, Literature and Theology University of Edinburgh

Core themes in The Acts: the Kingdom of God Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. (Acts 19:8) From morning till evening Paul explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. (Acts 28:23)

Core themes in The Acts: the Kingdom of God I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me - the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again. (Acts 20:24-25)

Core themes in The Acts: the Kingdom of God Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 28:31)

Core themes in The Acts: the exaltation of Jesus Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. (Acts 2:33) "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." (Acts 2:36) God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. (Acts 5:31)

Core themes in The Acts: the resurrection of Jesus God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. (Acts 2:24) Seeing what was ahead, David spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. (Acts 2:31-32)

Core themes in The Acts: the resurrection of Jesus You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. (Acts 3:15)

Core themes in The Acts: the resurrection of Jesus Know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (Acts 4:10) With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. (Acts 4:33)

Core themes in The Acts: the Lordship of Jesus The expression "the Lord Jesus" occurs more often in Acts than in any other book.

At the name of Jesus At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth (Phil 2:10)

At the name of Jesus And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. (1 John 3:23)

At the name of Jesus The Gospel … regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. (Romans 1:3-5)

In heaven and on earth Jesus came to them an said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matt 28:18-19)
