Facilities for Students Integrating Library and Student Services: Models from the UK Anne Bell University Librarian, Warwick

The UK Landscape Integrated service models are still new Experimentation – no single “best” model Multiple drivers and objectives Predominantly teaching intensive institutions (may change after 2012) 4 current models

Current Models Referral model –Glasgow Caledonian University Converged model –Liverpool John Moores and Kingston Co-location model –University of Huddersfield Collaboration model –University of Warwick

Coming Soon…. King’s College London Exeter University Edinburgh University More examples may follow after student tuition fees increase (x3) in 2012

The Warwick Model Redefining the role of the Library whilst keeping traditional library services The importance of “place” “Soft” collaborative approach Library as trusted, neutral partner Communities of practice Open approach to any partnerships

Strengthening Partnerships with LDC and IATL Continuous and regular meetings, both formal and informal Annual joint Teaching and Learning Showcase Proposed joint landing web page for Teaching and Learning agencies Joint calendar – one place for our target audience

Research Exchange To support the University strategy by delivering new services to postgraduate research students, early career and established researchers with a particular emphasis on collaboration and networking

We identified our USP among other support services Student Careers & Skills PGR provision Learning & Development Centre Research staff Institute of Advanced Study Early Career Fellows Doctoral training centres Doctoral training Research Support Services Funding support The University of Warwick Library unique selling point: a central service which provides support to all researchers irrespective of disciplines, career stages and research contexts and who can make interdisciplinary links

We demonstrated that we understood researchers... Conducted survey of research staff on needs (25 % response rate) Analysed the national surveys of researcher needs Developed ethos of Researcher to Researcher – a key feature of what we do

We showed that we understood the role of the other agencies... Skills delivery through the Researcher Development Framework 23 Things for the digital professional The power of peers led to Researcher to Researcher events Research Exchange as the hub for researcher skills delivery and research led events (700 in 2010/11)

We concentrated on supporting strategic values... Impact (REF2015 and RCUK) Interdisciplinary networks and collaborations Researcher to Researcher Publications database

Created two value propositions and based work round these... Value proposition for agencies... Library as the pollinator, facilitator and knowledge gateway Value proposition for researchers... Rich collaborations start with strong connections
