Topics, Session 7 Opening Remarks. Review. Activity #1: “Swap Shop.” examples and topics. Reading resources & techniques. Activity #2: Planning. Q & A (time permitting).

Review Importance of Exposure A LOT of exposure. Of interest to learners (ask them!). Different genres of language. Regular updates of “fresh” materials and resources. Feedback on what’s working.

Review Importance of Choice Students who are interested will be more engaged… Spend more time on task… Show better learning outcomes (become language users)… Enjoy their learning experience!

Review,Goals Resource-rich = Literacy-rich Build resource sets over time. Anchor use of resources to curriculum and learning goals. Avoid expensive investments of… -- Time! -- Money!

Demonstration “Swap Shop” Inventory Work in groups. Share a “sneak preview” of what you have brought for today’s resources exchange. Targeted Topics What topics from your curriculum will you use as resource “anchors?”

Technique #1 Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) minutes per day of “recreational reading.” Student choice of reading. Student choice of posture/place. Tie to reading logs, portfolios, or journals.

Technique #2 Book Discussion Groups and Literature Circles Student choice (ownership). Offer multiple levels and genres. Teacher models discussion. Students then lead and record. Tie into journaling activities.

Technique #3 Readers’ Theater Student choice. Everyone participates. Narration = framework. Students read from scripts. No full stage sets or costumes (small props / accessories = okay).

Pre-reading Strategies Book jacket, summary, review… “Cheat” and read the ending! Evaluate # of pages, chapter headings, # of new words… Pictures? Audio read-along as an option?
