The English Patient The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje The love in war is like a tragedy, it may be filled with death, adventure, sadness and betrayal

Summary At the end of World War II, a beautiful exhausted nurse; a maimed thief; a wary sapper : each was haunted by the English patient, who was burned and lay in an upstairs room in the Villa San Girolamo, a deserted Italian church.

Hana A young, Canadian nurse in a war hospital. She could not stand any more death from her patients. She beg for peace and someone to love.

Kip A young calm Indian Sikh, serving for England as a mine-disarmer. Although the love between he and Hana is content and sweet, he finally finds nothing can repair the damage from war. The power of war and the unbalance from nation to nation shock his bottom of heart again and again.

Caravagio A middle age thief by nature, became spy at the war. Morphine and sympathy are all what he needs in the end. Just another tragedy in the war.

Almazy (the English patient) A member of England’s Geographical Society who was full of knowledge, geography, poetry, history, art and weapon. He tells a story of another life, a life that he had before he lay dying in the bed. A true love for Katherine. Now, it seems he has lost everything including his lover, his friends, and his body.
