Tutorial Week 5 USING RefWorks EBP, Summer 2010

RefWorks RefWorks is an academic product that SFU offers its students. It helps students produce correctly-formatted reference pages for their research essays.

RefWorks creates your reference page (also called a bibliography) for you! All you need to do is enter the required information for each of your resources and RefWorks does all the rest. RefWorks

Using RefWorks can be a bit complicated. So, go slowly through this tutorial. Repeat the tutorial as many times as you need. Also use RefWorks Help. You will likely use RefWorks for your 4 years of study here at SFU. So, you might as well learn to use it now in the EBP. RefWorks

The most important thing in RefWorks is for you to type in (correctly!) the required information in the correct window box. RefWorks

Step 1: Choosing the formatting style for your reference page In RefWorks, this is the first window at the top. It is called “View fields used by:” In the EBP, we use APA 6 th. So, for each entry, make sure “APA 6th” is selected. Look at the next slide to see how this is done.

1. No style selected 2. Select from drop list 3. Select APA 6th 4. Correct APA style

RefWorks Step 2: Choosing the folder where your entries are stored In this tutorial, you will create and use a folder named “Practice”

Choose your folder – where you want to save your resources The folder’s name appears below. This means this is where your references will be saved.

RefWorks Step 2: Choosing the folder where your entries are stored If you forget to save a resource into the “Practice” folder, it will not appear on your reference list. You will then need to a)find the missing entry (use “VIEW > ALL REFERENCES”) and then b)move it to the “Practice” folder.

RefWorks Step 3: Choosing the resource type There are MANY different reference types: books, magazines, journals, webpages, databases, etc. You have to choose what type each of your resources is.

RefWorks has MANY different types. Most of these you can ignore. The main reference types you will use are: 1.Book, Edited 2.Book, Section (e.g. a chapter in an edited book) 3.Book, Whole 4.Journal Article (i.e. printed paper) 5.Journal, Electronic (i.e. on-line or from a data base) 6.Magazine Article 7.Newspaper Article 8.Web Page NOTE: You must select the correct type FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL RESOURCE.

RefWorks Step 4: Choosing the source type (i.e. what format your resource is in) There are 2 main types of sources: 1.printed (i.e. paper you can buy, hold in your hands, etc) 2.electronic (i.e. viewed on a computer screen) You must select the type for each of your resources.

Specify resource type Is the resource printed (i.e. paper – something you are holding in your hands) or electronic (something you see on a computer screen or access through your computer)? This resource is electronic

RefWorks Finished! So, here is an example. You are now ready to enter the required information (e.g., title, author, date, place of publication, etc.)    

RefWorks Now TRY IT! Let’s pretend your IRP topic is Children and the Internet. Your research questions is, “Is the Internet dangerous for children?” Here are the 7 resources you will use to practice creating a reference page using RefWorks.

Source #1 REFERENCE TYPE: CHAPTER IN AN EDITED BOOK RefWorks

Source 1: cover

Source 1: inside cover

Source 1: publication page

Source 1: contents This chapter is your resource. Note: RefWorks calls a chapter a “section”.

RefWorks I have done this one for you. Look at how this resource was entered into RefWorks.

RefWorks I have done this one for you. Look at how this resource was entered into RefWorks. Folder where this will be savedDate of book You find this info on the publication page Enter the editors HERE. The title of the book – front cover You do not need to enter anything here. IGNORE all of these boxes! Note that the last page (146) is entered in the “Other Pages” window. RefWorks does not say “last” or “end” page. RefWorks calls a chapter a section Proper types: a section (chapter) in a printed book Authors of the chapter (section), NOT the editors.Note how authors names are entered. It is VERY important for you to do this correctly! Title of the chapter, NOT the book..Blank because this is the original – no second or third editionDo not enter the full address; only the city and countryBegin by selecting the proper style format: APA 6th For electronic resources – if given, enter (copy and paste) the “Digital Object Identifier”. For this resource, the DOI is blank because this resource is print, not electronic.

RefWorks Now, SAVE this entry.

RefWorks After you have saved this entry, go to “VIEW” plus “ALL REFERENCES”. Here is what you will see.

RefWorks You will see that I actually entered 2 of the resources. After you have saved this entry, go to “VIEW” plus “ALL REFERENCES.: Here is what you will see.

RefWorks If you find that you made an error, simple click the “Edit” link to go back to the entry page. After you have saved this entry, go to “VIEW” plus “ALL REFERENCES.: Here is what you will see.

RefWorks Now, you do the rest.
