Rendering Project Product Design Sketching Activity

What Is Product Rendering While thumb-nail sketching is very useful for us to think visually and generate ideas, it has its drawbacks  Not telling us about ergonomics, manufacturability, construction, etc.  Small, not presentable  Not usable for downstream works An idea is a ‘pie in the sky’ unless it has been rendered Product rendering may be executed when  A ‘milestone’ record is preferred  Visual summary is need to evaluate progress  Time for idea generation is up

A Rendering Project

Stage 1 - Posing Determine the best viewing angle and convergence Fine-tune the proportion and alignment, mark the ‘hard-points’ and ‘hard- lines’ clearly Ensure that the pose is usable for as many of the presentation views as possible, sometime the framework is drawn as an ‘exploded view’

Stage 2 – Form Giving Generate various final forms, be creative while at the same time observe all the hard-points and hard-lines Use thin pencil lines to outline the form, check that the voids and details are in good balance Indentations and ribs are very useful for ‘balancing’ the form

Stage 3 - Projecting Create a projection of your final form Usually 2-3 views will fully define your form Outline of human figure may be drawn to check ergonomics Many design conflicts are discovered and resolved in this stage Draw a final perspective view using the framework

Stage 4 - Rendering Test the colour, lighting, and shadow position on a thumbnail first Use pencil to trace the outline on the final sheet, photocopy may be used as template for quick presentation Apply marker and pastel Outline with fine black pen at last

Stage 5 - Diagramming Use the perspective view as template, draw the operating procedure Partial views may be used
