Background and Motivation Evolution in laser technology - The available bandwidth has increased. - Output wavelength can be tuned New shutter technology needed - System to block range of wavelengths. Infrared modulator -IR modulator less developed -High spec in open transmission

Background and Motivation Modulator using oxide shutter - Vanadium oxide is implemented - Thermochromic property Open/Closed mode operations - Open mode transmittance is high - Closed mode reflectance occurs

The Design Deposit oxide on glass panel by sol-gel method Design a micro heater attached to glass Add photodetector for display Implement testing system for shutter characterization

Sol Gel Process Melt VO2 at 600C Pour it in water Spin it 3-5 times The higher the speed, the lower the thickness Fire film at 500C for about 2 hours 15g per 500ml of distilled water

Derivation of Design Algorithm Goal? Power Calculation Energy (heat calculation) Relationship between heat and power Resistance, Resistivity, length, Area? Current Density requirements

Actual Design Reason For Design Restrictions on Design Possible Improvements

Photodetector and LED 3.4um LED Why PbSe? Are they compatible?

Deliverables of the Design Project Produce optical shutter designed for 3-5um Characterize the shutter for optical performance and switching time. Evaluation of measurements would give guidelines development of the shutter in a real system. Laser protection should have % open transmission and less than 1 % closed transmission The switching time from open to closed mode on the order of µs-ms.

Design Alternative Implementing modulator as real system Can be used as data storage Window coating application Military applications

MDR specifications Make experimental thin films by depositing VO2 using the sol gel method Configure a method for making heating appliance Derive values and specifications for heating process Experiment on the laser and photo detector settings Look into making the project more efficient Conduct tests on shutter characterization
