© 2005 John Wiley & Sons PPT1 Midterm Essay – Sharing my comments Negative: 1.The position could be made clearer and more obvious. 2.There are too many generalizations; no references have been included and the example provided is vague and general. 3.Personal language (I, we, us) is used throughout the essay. Impersonal language is preferred in academic writing. 4.The flow of the argument is somewhat disrupted. 5.Internally the paragraphs work; however, there needs to be better transition between paragraphs. This would also help the flow of the argument. 6.Supporting material is integrated into the text fairly well but some of the material is included is irrelevant and doesn’t add to the position. 7.Generally the structure is OK but the body fails to follow that same pattern of argumentation as set out in the introduction. 8.A few syntactical and punctuation problems, such as a sentence fragment and a missing apostrophe as well as occasional poor word choice.

© 2005 John Wiley & Sons PPT2 Midterm Essay Comments Positive: 1.Use of source material - Selecting relevant evidence - Accurate and smooth integration of supporting evidence - Free of irrelevant material 2.Structure and development of the essay - Follows structure of an essay - Focused position statement which explicitly addresses the question - Legitimate paragraphing with clear focused topic sentences - Appropriate statement of conclusion which reiterates the main line of argument in discussion - Critical evaluation of evidence demonstrated - Logically structured argument - Logically flow of ideas within and between paragraphs

© 2005 John Wiley & Sons PPT3 Midterm Essay Comments Positive: 3.Academic writing style - Language appropriately impersonal, formal and clear - Generalizations qualified where appropriate - Appropriate use of both specialized and general vocabulary 4.Grammatical correctness - Accurate sentence structure - Punctuation which correctly conveys meaning and sentence structure - Consistent and appropriate tense choice

© 2005 John Wiley & Sons PPT5 Midterm Essay Comments Overall: Some Figures - 4 days were spent on marking, on average 1.5 hrs & 3 times per essay. Next time: 1 page limit; students take the marker’s role; recognize the best essay, the best marker (comments), and the worst works - No variation in format and presentation unless some stand out in either item got 1 or 2 more (fewer) marks for recognition - M ore than half 70s & 60s, a few 80s - 4 essays deserve acknowledgement Their essays impressed me in terms of originality or good writing (i.e., expresses a clear point, is tightly structured, grammatically and syntactically correct, substantive, and interesting

© 2005 John Wiley & Sons PPT6 Midterm Essay Comments Comments on the end: - Writing takes time to improve - Practice makes perfect - To judge your course performance just on the basis of these two pieces of paper is not wise (10% of your final grade)
