TRENDS IN PRODUCT USAGE STUDENT ACTIVITY #3

EARLY 1900 MOST CLOTHING WAS MADE OF WOOL, LINEN OR COTTON. WHITE CLOTHES WERE USUALLY WASHED IN VERY HOT WATER WITH HOMEMADE SOAP LATE 1900 MOST CLOTHES CONTAIN SYNTHETIC FIBER AND ARE WASHED WITH DETERGENT AND WARM WATER WHICH IS FLUSHED DOWN A DRAIN BY AN AUTOMATIC WASHER. MANY CLOTHES CONTAIN FIBERS THAT REQUIRE A CHEMCIAL PROCESS OF DRY- CLEANING FLUSHING BYPORDUCT OF DRY CLEANING PROCESS DOWN THE DRAIN.

EARLY 1900 ELBOW GREASE WAS THE RINCIPAL INGREDIENT IN HOME CLEANING LATE 1900 VACUM CLEANERS HAVE REPLACED BRROMS AND CONSUMERS USE A HOST OF SPECIALIZED, POWERFUL CLEANERS: SCOWERING POWDERS WITH BLEACH, NO- WAX FLOOR CLEANERS, DETERGRENTS, OVEN CLEANERS, TOILET BOWL CLEANERS AND FURNITUTRE POLISHES. CHEMICALS ARE DOING THE JOB PEOPLE USE TO DO.

EARLY 1900 CAREFUL HOUSEKEEPING WAS NEEDED TO KEEP PETS LIKE FLEAS, LICE, AND BEDBUGS A BAY. LATE 1900 TODAY INSECTICIDES ARE USED TO CONTRIL SUCH PESTS. MANY PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPEDD TO CONTROLODOR AND ANCT AS AN ABSORBANT FOR PET WASTE. THESE CAT LITTERS EVENTUALLY BECOME PART OF A LANDFILL AND CAN NOT BE USED IN COMPOST.

EARLY 1900 MOVING HORSE MANURE OUT OF THE CITIES WAS A HUGE WASTE MANAGEMENT ISSUE. TODAY MOST FAMILIED HAVE 2 OR MORE AUTOMOBILES AND 40,000 MILES IS THE AVERAGE WEAR FOR A PAIR OF SYNTHETIC TIRES. MANY TOXIC CHEMICALS ARE USED TO MANAGE THE FUNCTIONS OF AN AUTOMOBLIE CAUSING WATER POLLUTION ALONG WITH AIR POLLUTION FROM THE BURING OF A FOSSIL FUEL.

EARLY 1900 MOST PEOPLE DIED FRO INFECTIOUS DISEASES TODAY MEDICINE CABINETS ARE FILLED WITH MEDICINES, MANY OF WHICH ARE EXPIRED AND NEED TO BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY

EALRY 1900 BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED OF WOOD-LOG CABINS, PLANK FLOORS, WALL STUDS-THEIR DETERIORATION LEFT THEM PART OF THE ENVIRONMENT TODAY BUILDINGS ARE MADE OF CONCRETE, STEEL OR METAL. WHEN TAKEN DOWN THE DEBRIS BECOMES PART OF LANDFILLS

EARLY 1900 THE WOOL FROM 2 SHEEP MADE A BEAUTIFUL SWEATER, THE WOOL FROM SHEEP MADED A CRAPET FOR A LIVING ROOM TODAY RECYCLED BOOTLES YEILD ENOUGH FIBER FOR A T-SHIRT, A SQUARE FOOT CARPET OR A SKI JACKET. 25 BOTTLES MAKE A SWEATERR AND 35 BOTTLES ARE ENOUGH TO MAKE THE FILLING OF A SLEEPING BAG.
