Critical path: Issue: target shaft: – Reported last week: One-piece shaft has failed Begin study of joining two piece shaft – Jason has considered: Pinned and welded options Sample now about to be sent to EB welder for weld: – Interference fit, stitch weld to secure – Unwelded interference fit already very strong – More optimism this week than last!
‘Dry’/trial assembly 08Jul09: Basically successful Issue revealed: – Need to support vacuum tube at each end to ensure no strain on weld – Scheme agreed and Belleville washers identified Sample being sent to JT Update to drawing will be made
Impact on schedule: Shaft manufacture now ~4 weeks behind schedule Can still recover: – Electron-beam weld ‘baseline’ – Expect samples back in a couple of days, then: Test (pull test, stiffness test) – Although EB weld was baseline, will still prepare short paper for TB There is still risk here! – Remain well aware of need to install target in August shutdown Also remain well aware of continuing requirement to maintain high standards of quality control and tracking of manufacture
