An Approach to Recover Hydrocarbons from Currently Off-Limit Areas of the Antrim Formation, MI Using Low-Impact Technologies DOE Contract DE-FC26-06NT42931 Michigan Technological University Houghton, Michigan Principal Investigator: Dr. James R. Wood Industry Partner: Jordan Development Company, LLC.

Figure 1. Location map of the Northern Michigan Antrim Gas Play showing the producing Antrim wells. The shaded area shows the Antrim subcrop in Northern Michigan. The current Antrim development can be determined from the well density in the southern (basinward) areas of the subcrop. The potential new areas to be exploited are mainly in the Antrim subcrop outside of the drilled intervals (mainly in the western and northern subcrop). It is estimated that roughly an area equal to the present production could be opened up to drilling if this program is successful. The red dot indicates location of the project demonstration well, Permit

Figure 2. Same caption as previous figure with the exception that structure contours on the top of the Antrim formation have been added. The contour interval is 100 feet. Well data is current to Additional well data will be added over the course of this project.

Figure 3. Schematic diagram illustrating the drilling plan to tap the shallow Antrim gas reserves using a slant well in place of a vertical well and casing it so that it satisfies Michigan regulatory statutes. Horizontal wells will branch out to the pay zones off the slant well. Note that the laterals can slope upward to drain water to the pump at the bottom of the slant well. Gas is produced in the outer tubing and goes directly to the surface. Water is drained to the bottom of the slant well and pumped up the inner annulus. The gamma ray log illustrates the highly variable nature of the radioactivity in the Antrim which can be used to locate and guide the drill bit using MWD (Measurement While Drilling) technology.

Figure 4. Project base map for Northwest Michigan showing the subsurface geology in the vicinity of the test well as well as the area of the Antrim potentially affected by slant drilling. This map is from the Michigan DEQ Bedrock Well Study, October 11, Red symbols indicate existing gas wells.

Figure 5. Working basemap for the DOE LINGO Project. Red circle shows location of project demonstration well. Blue circles show the bottom hole locations of the proposed slant wells.
