Visions from the Future Inspiration college 14 April 2008

Agenda Introduction: some definitions Robbert Ritmeester Justus Sturkenboom Charlie Mulholland Conclusion: some tips

Nota Bene I will use the word “computer” here to refer to any device that has computing power embedded in it – This could refer to your laptop – But also a mobile phone, a car, games console, PDA, fridge, etc.

Recognition We recognize all sorts of things all the time – Faces, the way people walk, emotions, words (spoken, signed and written), symbols, places, etc., etc. Computers find this very difficult Recognition for this project refers to technologies that allow computers to recognize things – Do not under-estimate what an achievement it is to get a computer to do even the simplest recognition tasks

Location Location for this project means the ability of a computer to know its (and often as a result your) position in space This is made possible by technologies such as: – GPS, Wi-Fi, RFID, UMTS

Interface Here we are interested in changes the way we interact with our computers Interface has two elements: – The interface itself AND – The control / input mechanism (I/O devices) Both of these are changing Hardware for display – Wii, Microsoft Surface, iPhone, ePaper, etc. I/O devices – Wii mote, multi-touch, voice, gesture, etc.

Augmented reality Augmented Reality (AR) is not Virtual Reality AR uses the real-world and adds computer generated information to it (it augments the real-world) This can be done via – Mobile phones, Head Mounted Displays, Heads Up Displays, projection – Often combined with location technologies

Omnipresent screens Simply put screens are everywhere already and are becoming cheaper and more flexible (perhaps literally) – Many have a computer imbedded Screens can display our interfaces What are the possibilities of this trend?

Inspiration

Kismet: emotion recognition

More emotion recognition

Augmented reality
