The coaches role An FLL coach should provide the following: GuidanceStructure Safe environment Encouragement A FUN EXPERIENCE!

What does it take to be an FLL coach? PatienceDedication A willingness to learn alongside the team Willing and able to give your time to students Let the kids do the work

Your First Team Meeting Meet people properly (First Impressions ) Finds things you have in common Make meeting conditions good Everyone can contribute Write things down Find good things to say about other peoples ideas Be honest but not harsh Avoid conflict at all costs

Team Dynamics Things to consider: Team size Age variations Time commitment Boys vs. girls High achievers vs. low achievers Avoid cliques

How do we begin? Begin with small teams until you develop the ability to work together as a larger unit. Those units can be: Builders and Programmers Research, Documentation, and Communication Start to integrate the small units into one large team Encourage and monitor interaction

Team Building Ideas & Strategies Rotate roles so everyone has a chance to try something new. Interview activity (To get to know each other, ice breaker) Team-building meeting (Choose team name, logo, team color, themes, etc.) Parental involvement

Things to avoid Some common mistakes: My idea is the best one…everyone should follow me (Strong personalities) No defined roles or responsibilities Lack of communication Cliques

First LEGO League Values Respect each other in the best spirit of teamwork Behave with courtesy and compassion for others at all times Honor the spirit of friendly competition Act with integrity Demonstrate gracious professionalism Encourage others to adopt these values

Have a great season!
