 France

His Impact He changed the maps for France.

Cartier was sent to the new world by the French king to start a settlement. He was also sent to claim land for France.

 Jacques Cartier was a French sailor.

 One of Jacques Cartier’s motives was he went to sail. He was a French sailor and sailed to what is now Quebec.

 Another one of his motives was to find gold but, he was mainly sailing and NOT looking for gold.

Start of exploration. 1 st voyage. 2 nd voyage. 3 rd voyage. End of exploration

 In 1521 Spain reached Asia by sailing around the southern tip of South America.  King Francis the 1 st wanted to reach China’s riches by sailing across North America but, nobody had looked for such a water passage.  Explorers had established that the Americas lay between Europe and Asia but, people still believed that China was not far beyond the west coast of North America.

 Cartier named Canada “Kanata” meaning village or settlement in Huron – Iroquois.  He was born in Saint -Malo in Brittney.  The navigation aids on his ship were, astrolabes, charts, compasses, cross-staffs, noc- turnals, traverse boards and, almanacs.

 On Cartier’s 1 st voyage the king sent him to find the Northwest Passage. Cartier sailed west to Newfoundland, in present-day Canada. Cartier claimed the land for France but, his ship was low on food so he had to return to France.

 In 1535 King Francis sent Jacques back to the new world to explore and map the water way. Cartier was the one ( on that voyage and everywhere ) who named the St. Lawrence river. After 1,000 miles up the river his boat could go no farther. He brought an Indian chief back to France. The chief told the king of France about riches farther west.

 In 1541 the king sent Cartier on a 3 rd voyage to set up a French empire in North America. Cartier took 100 settlers but, after 2 harsh winters they GAVE UP! In 1542, they returned to France and Cartier still staked France’s claim for North America. 60 years later “New France” had it’s 1 st permanent settlers.
