Frontloading Lesson: Fact & Opinion, Inferences (Inferring Author’s Viewpoint)

 Standard: R 2.5 Distinguish facts, supported inferences, and opinions in text.  Objective: Students will be able to make inferences about the author’s viewpoint by identifying facts and opinions from the text.

 Fact: a statement that can be proved true.  Can I prove it is correct? If yes, it is a fact.  Can the statement be checked somehow? If yes, it is a fact.  Opinion: someone’s personal feelings; a judgment  Author’s Viewpoint: an author lets the reader know how they feel about something by the things they include in the text.

Everyone thought she was a great soldier. She was hurt twice during battle. The first time she was cut on the head by a sword. The next time, she was shot in the shoulder. The doctors finally discovered she was a woman when she got very sick. Although the army was shocked, she had earned their respect so they did not punish her.
