Dissertation – Finnvid Prescher Title: Seed orchards – genetic considerations on function, management and seed procurement. Start: summer 2004 Planned disputation: Friday Planned focus on P sylvestris in seed orchards, genetics and seeds (less focus on spruce and pollen) Last edit January 2007 Remark: as the dissertation took place as planned and successful , this presentation is only of historic interest, but is sill kept here for documentationary reasons. All manuscripts planned here are now accepted or printed, thus the plans here were successfully completed.

Past history Finnvid was doctorand for Anders Persson, spruce and pine provenances, in Garpenberg some decades ago. Dag L was pherically involved. That resulted in some papers, which could be part of a thesis, but the current thesis starts from scratch.

Study (lead author)StateResult Linear deployment thinning (Prescher,…) Good manuscript Algorithm for genetic thinning. Can combine raise in gain and diversity! Optimal clone number in seed orchard (Lindgren&Prescher 2005) Published. Silvae Genetica clones suggested for future Swedish seed orchards, lower for American P taeda. Only outcrossing considered for clonal reproductive output (Prescher,…2006) Published TGG Linear deployment almost optimal even if only outcrossing considered, but relation gain and eff numb changes

Study (lead author)StateResult Seed set in seed orchards (Prescher,…Kroon 2005) Published Komi proceedings Few cones in large pine grafts visible; rough measures good enough for CV; high seed production in old seed orchards etc. Economic optimization of seed orchard establishment (El- Kassaby, Prescher…2007) SJFR in pressShorter life time for Scots pine seed orchards than planned today is advantageous (30 years instead of 40). Start harvest early in spite of contamination favourable. Recommend grafts/ha harvested 8-30 years.

StudyStateResult Model for benefit of establishing a new seed orchard with Norway spruce as model (Morigushi, Prescher…?) Manuscript Optimal seed orchard productive life longer for Norway spruce than Scots pine. Can be shorter if value of gain high Reproductive and morphologic characters in Turkish Scots pine seed orchards (Bilir, Prescher…2007) Published Euphytica Within clone variation important, broad sense heritability not very high, variation among clones limited, not high correlation among characters, diameter reasonable correlation with flowering Seed set variation in Turkish Scots pine seed orchards (Bilir, Prescher…Kroon) Manuscript Almost as much filled seeds in the bottom of the crown as in the top, in contrast to earlier Swedish studies. Half of the seed production is in the middle third of the crown, one quarter in the top and one quarter in the bottom.

StudyStateResult Variation in seed set among clones (Prescher,.… 2007) SubmittedSmaller variation among clones in seed set than earlier assume (Kang et al 2003). “Sibling coefficient” around Ψ=1.3 Clone*time interaction for seed set (Kroon, Prescher…2007) Manuscript. Some, but not high, correlation between seed set of clones in the same seed orchard at early and late age Correlation between cone set at different places Yordan, Lindgren, Prescher Will be published in Turkey proceeding as long abstract (3p). Low and variable correlation make it doubtful to select for seed set

In presentable form (Jan07, available through library services or on the net or via Dag Lindgren) : Published Lindgren D and Prescher F Optimal clone number for seed orchards with tested clones. Submitted manuscript Lindgren D, Tellalov Y & Prescher F Seed set for Scots pine grafts is difficult to predict In Proceedings of the IUFRO Division 2 Joint Conference: Low Input Breeding and Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources: Antalya, Turkey, 9-13 October Edited by Fikret Isik. p Manuscripts Prescher F, Lindgren D and Karlsson B.
