© Building Bridges with Technology, 2001 Boise State University Word Processing Model: High Level Analysis Using Microsoft Publisher™ to Report on Authors Ms. Sue O’Rorke 2 nd Grade Cecil D. Andrus Elementary School Meridian, Idaho Total time: 6 hours Subject: Language Arts © Building Bridges with Technology, 2001 Boise State University

Getting Started Ms. O’Rorke and her students were looking for a way to share their favorite books with other students in their school. Listen to the introduction to their project. Other Appropriate Problems The word processor can be an effective tool for presenting information in all grade levels and most content areas. Here are some sample projects for students in early elementary school. Monthly newsletter documenting content area learning and school events Holiday letters to friends and family “What I learned” statements, reports-- This could be a follow up assignment to any discovery lesson/activity Show and tell narratives, including pictures and text Writing roulette activities in which student groups are responsible for writing and contributing pieces to a shared work How else might early elementary students use a word processor? © Building Bridges with Technology, 2001 Boise State University

Guiding Student Research Once the children understand the project, they learn to ask questions that will help them complete the project. After discussion, Ms. O’Rorke and her students created this template to guide their research. © Building Bridges with Technology, 2001 Boise State University Name _______________________ Name of author ____________________________________ Where does the author live? ____________________________________ How many books has the author written? ____________________________________ Has she won any awards? ____________________________________ Does she have any pets or children? ____________________________________ Has she written any other books you really like? ________________________________
