Presentation transcript:

The Internal Revenue Service is auditing the University of Texas and Texas A&M University and a number of other universities across the nation. The UT audit began last week and is focusing on executive compensation practices and income unrelated to the university's educational mission, said Patti Ohlendorf, UT's vice president for legal affairs. "IRS agents will be on site periodically, and they are asking us for information regarding various campus activities, and they will review those activities with respect to income and expenses," Ohlendorf said. Austin schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen on Wednesday announced an immediate hiring freeze for all non-campus positions and said she is asking the board to declare the school district to be in a state of impending financial crisis. The proposed layoffs are part of planned wider cuts to help avert a projected shortfall in the school year. How big is that shortfall expected to be? Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning a key portion of federal campaign finance laws will invalidate Texas statutes prohibiting certain political spending by corporations, a government professor says. “Either Texas law will have to be changed or there will be state- level court cases that will rise ultimately to the Supreme Court, which will make an explicit decision,” said Brian Roberts, a University of Texas government professor. Texas law prohibits corporations from spending any money to directly or indirectly support a candidate for elective office. True or False: The state ban on direct corporate contributions to candidates is affected by the ruling? Need a hint? Read this article: Answer: False
