METAMORPHIC ROCK HEAT –heat from Earth’s core –rock softens, but does not melt PRESSURE –weight of layers above reshapes rock and rearranges minerals (B1, Figure 3)

FOLIATED METAMORPHIC ROCK When heated and pressed: Minerals can flatten and line up in parallel bands. Rock looks striped (B1, Figure 4)

NON-FOLIATED METAMORPHIC ROCK When heated and pressed: Minerals can grow larger, but not line up and flatten. Rock looks “glittery” or “crystal- like”
