Science Integration Paul Hertz AAA/Science, SMD Lead, Science Integration Joint Meeting of SScAC/ESSAAC March 30, 2005

Science Integration Objectives –Identify explicit constraints on the Integrated Space Architecture –Identify a core mission set from the Strategic Roadmaps Optimize the Integrated Space Architecture / Strategic Plan for science strategic objectives –Create an integrated science story and science strategy for the agency Provide science rationale and context (drawn from the Strategic Roadmaps) for critical agency decisions

Science Integration Cast of characters –Lead: Paul Hertz, HQ/SMD –Team: Coordinators from roadmaps with a science component: 1 Lunar8 Universe 2 Mars9 Earth 3 Solar System10 Sun-Solar System 4 Earth-like Planets12 Education 6 ISS –“System scientists” most of whom are not associated with any roadmaps.

Science Integration System Scientists (so far) –Paul Hertz (HQ) – Lead –Rich Mushotzky (GSFC) –Jay Bergstrahl (LaRC) –Dan McCleese (JPL) –Dale Cruikshank (ARC) –Guenter Riegler (ARC) –Randy Friedl (JPL)–Mark Schoeberl (GSFC) ** –Jim Garvin (HQ) –Rich Vondrak (GSFC –Wes Huntress (CIW) –Mike Werner (JPL) –Mark Jernigan (JSC)–Bruce Wielicki (LaRC) ** –Russ Kerschman (ARC) –Mike King (GSFC) ** ** not confirmed

Science Integration High priority science activities for NASA –Science that is enabled by exploration –Science that is fundamental and transformative –Science that is required in service to support other objectives (e.g. exploration, climate change, other agencies, etc.) The Strategic Roadmaps will identify high priority science activities for NASA

Science Integration Notional Plan –Collect linkages from SRC coordinators –Organizational telecon –Identify additional linkages through reading by system scientists of draft Strategic Roadmaps submitted to NRC on April 15 –Science integration workshop –Present module at first synthesis workshop –Iterate as needs develop

Science Integration Schedule –Before March 30 Identify and sign-up system scientists Telecon with SRC Co-Chairs (March 24) –Interim Coordinators are identifying potential linkages and submitting them to the APIO matrix –Before April 15 Planning meeting/telecon (2 hours) (April 5) Goal: Define the first draft Science Module Decide how to gather data from the SRM delivery to the NRC Decide how to gather data from coordinators' notes and APIO matrix Decide what the first draft Science Module deliverable is Assign actions and deadlines –April 15 Strategic Roadmap delivery to NRC

Science Integration Schedule (continued) –April 15 Strategic Roadmap delivery to NRC –Interim System scientists read all SRMs and identify potential linkages Everyone drafts portions of the Science Module –Before the Synthesis Workshop (mid May) Working meeting (1-2 days) Goal: Develop first draft Science Module for delivery to first Synthesis Workshop Identify true linkages Create draft timeline/science strategic roadmap/science story/mission set –First Synthesis Workshop (mid/late May) TBD –and Beyond (TBD) Review of science module by NSAC at summer meeting TBD

Science Integration Connections between Strategic Roadmaps –True Roadmap dependencies. Where a science activity or objective in one Roadmap depends on the completion of a science activity from another Roadmap. –Science that enables technology. Where a science activity is required before a technical capability can be developed. – Science objective dependencies. Where achieving a science objective in one Roadmap might depend on or be enhanced by a science activity carried out by another Roadmap. –Science synergies. Where the science outcomes from multiple Roadmaps contribute to a larger state of knowledge than either one alone.
