NRE701: Promoting New Progress Indicators February 7, 2005

Purpose Flaws exist with GDP’s measurement of progress New sustainable indicators have been developed However, none of these indicators have been widely adopted New progress indicator may change mental models of “progress” & the actions people take in order to achieve progress. Goal: to get a sustainable progress indicator widely adopted

Objectives Analyze how indicators are developed and become adopted nationally as well as globally. Determine how a new progress indicator is adopted by different sectors – government organizations, financial firms, educational/research institutions, corporations, the public, etc. Develop a plan for a new indicator to become widely adopted. Have several key organizations to commit to using a new indicator.

Redefining Progress RP measures the real state of our economy, our environment, and social justice with tools like the Genuine Progress Indicator and the Ecological Footprint. RP designs policies—like environmental tax reform—to shift behavior in these three domains (economy, environment, and equity) towards sustainability. RP promotes and create new frameworks—like common assets—to replace the ones that are taking us away from long-term social, economic, and environmental health.
